Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec "Tribute to Van Gogh" Lithograph Printed by the Mourlot brothers in 1952 Measure 32x35 cm signature on the plate of the master, very rare and wonderful The work is a portrait of the Dutch friend Van Gogh that Toulouse Lautrec realized in 1887 and that today is kept at the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam. The extraordinary work is a pastel on small paper, which depicts the painter sitting in a coffee, absorbed in his thoughts, to sip a flute resting in front of him on the shelf, certainly asset (recognizable by the delicate and almost imperceptible green shade), a drink very in vogue at time, especially among creatives, also known as " green fairy "And of which it is well known, Van Gogh often used. As the painter recalls Paul Signac , he had the habit of going to the bar at the end of the day, also because the coffee, at the time, were places for meeting and comparison with artists and intellectuals, therefore usual weather. The work manages to bring out, with great emotional charge, the artist's inner feeling. We don't see the gaze directly, but we can understand it. In fact, Toulouse Lautrec, who was linked to Vincent as a great artistic esteem and profound friendship, frees its lyricism by outlining the profile of the face. Everything becomes substantially more introspective. The slightly oblong tract that usually characterizes the artist's paintings develops and evolves, here, in a more whirlwind, more "butidian", angular, entertaining the work and materializing all the internal worries, the sense of oppression, enclosed in it. The color palette is essential, but expertly selected: green, intense blue, yellow with orange tips, loved colors and used very often also by Van Gogh himself. A masterpiece that deserves to be known and loved for the not only artistic value, but also a content that she holds and that, still today, is more alive than ever in our eyes.
